Hey Friend,
DO YOU HAVE IT?
I just got done reading an interesting book.
I found it so interesting that I read it in about 10 hours.
271 pages.
Not something I do all that often. It usually takes
me about a week or so to finish a book.
But this one was very interesting to me.
It was written by Bryan Cranston.
For those of you who don’t know who that is,
he was the lead actor on the Netflix hit show,
“Breaking Bad”.
A show that I absolutely loved.
The book talks about Breaking Bad as well
as Bryan’s other TV series that he starred in
as well as his life growing up and all of the
odd jobs he had that led to his acting career.
I’ve since started a new book. This one is about
Kobe Bryant, The star basketball player from
the LA Lakers. Arguably one of the greatest
players to play basketball (he is 3rd on the
all time scoring list ahead of Michael Jordan
and he has 5 championships and 18 all star awards).
Not too shabby, huh?
Even though these 2 men couldn’t be more opposite
than they are, they do share one common trait.
They were/are far beyond driven to be the best at what they did.
Bryan Cranston did everything he could to make it. He worked
behind the scenes at playhouses just to be close to the actors.
He worked his odd jobs at night during the graveyard shift just
so he would be available to audition during the day. He moved to
LA so he could learn from the best, etc.
Nothing was going to stop him.
Kobe Bryant told everyone that he was going to be better
than Michael Jordan someday. He said this when he was a pre-teen.
He practiced for HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS.
Day in and day out, year in and year out.
I guess I kind of get drawn in to these kinds of people because
I find it so admirable.
To me, having a “far-reaching but achievable” goal and then reaching it is one of the best things in the world.
Setting out to do something, especially something that others
say you won’t be able to do, and then doing it is just the greatest.
But it has to be a burning desire for you.
And then something funny happens when you do reach it,
it doesn’t actually seem like that big of a deal. Because
you knew you were going to do it all along.
One of those things for me was the IRONMAN triathlon.
I trained for 9 months for that one race. And I’d be damned
if I wasn’t going to finish it.
And guess what…I did.
And…….it made me feel alive! It made me believe
that there were so many other things I could do.
I have that drive now with trying to obtain the best physique I can and be as healthy as I can.
As much muscle and as little bodyfat as possible.
Sleeping optimally, eating nutritiously, etc.
Will I ever get there? You bet I will.
I know I’ll get there because it drives me. That one goal
makes me feel alive each day and gives me a purpose.
My own personal purpose.
I also have a lot more of a purpose in life. I’m not that shallow
to think that a good physique is my only purpose.
My wife, my kids, my family, etc.
To be a great husband, to be a great dad, to be a great brother, etc.
But we should also each have a “personal” drive. Something
that motivates us on a personal level.
And don’t think of it as selfish. Because it’s not.
So what is your drive? What gets you up in the morning?
What are you trying to accomplish for yourself that will
make you happy?
Do you have that “burning desire” to obtain it?
I hope so.
If not, try and get it. And if you can’t get it, then maybe you're not chasing the right dream?
