Hey Friend,
SUMMER SUMMER SUMMERTIME
The above line is from the 1991 Will Smith song called “Summertime”.
Back in the day when he was a rapper and better known as the “Fresh Prince”, before he was slapping people around, this was one of his hit songs. I wasn’t a huge fan of his music, but this song I liked a lot.
This song always brings me back to my high school years when it first came out and reminds me of what a great time of the year it was when school let out and we had the entire summer to look forward to.
It also reminds me of other things.
Like being able to play basketball with my son until it gets dark out. And I can do that because I’m in good enough shape to be able to play basketball for hours.
Like being able to go to the soccer field to practice corner kicks with my daughter who played soccer in high school. Because I can stay out there with her and run around just like I did when I was in high school.
I often talk about lifting weights and doing anaerobic cardio and eating right in order to burn fat, lose weight and look great.
But sometimes there’s more to it than that.
I love to look the best I can and I don’t want to ever get or look “out of shape”. That’s really my #1 priority.
But coming in close second is being able to do the things I mentioned above.
I can’t imagine not being able to play basketball with my son….ever! I plan on playing with him well beyond his high school days. Which would put me in my 50’s. And I don’t mean just shoot around with him, I mean play in games with him!
I can’t imagine not going to the high school track with my daughter and doing sprints and stadium stair jumps with her. And I plan on doing that with her when she’s out of college. Which will put me in my 50’s.
So what does the summertime mean to you. Hiding begind baggy clothes still? Sweating the minute you step outside and avoiding any physical activity?
Are you able to be active with your kids?
Or maybe you don’t have kids.
Are you able to go to the beach with your friends and swim for hours on end?
Are you able to go for a bike ride on a beautiful summer night?
If a friend randomly calls you up to play a game of tennis, would you be able to?
With the summertime comes a bunch of opportunities to be active and enjoy life.
It’s a shame to not experience any of these things because you’re not in good enough shape.
But it’s not too late.
About 6 weeks from now it will only be June 22nd, the first day of summer.
You can get a lot done between now and June 22nd.
And you will also get a whole lot out of the journey that gets you there.
So don’t let this summer pass you by as you sit on the sidelines watching life go past you.
Start your summertime work outs now…..and experience everything that the summer has to offer.
