Hey Friend,

Are your prioritie(s) the reason you haven'r accomplished anything?

This is somewhat of a trick question.

How is it a trick question you might be thinking?

Well, did you ever think about the word itself….priorities?

More specifically, it’s the plural version of the word priority, right?

So let’s take a look at the meaning and origin of the word priority, as explained by Greg McKeown from his book, Essentialism, that I am reading for the second time.

Stay with me here, this is all going to make sense in about 1 minute:

In Essentialism, Greg has this to say about Priorities:

“The word priority came into the english language in the 1400’s. It was singular. It meant the very first or prior thing. It stayed singular for the next 500 years. Only in the 1900’s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities. Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word we could bend reality. Somehow we would now be able to have multiple “first” things. People and companies routinely try to do just that. One leader told me of his experience in a company that talked of “Pri-1, Pri-2, Pri-3, Pri-4 and Pri-5″. This gave the impression of many things being the priority but in reality, it meant nothing was.”

Makes you stop and think about it when you hear something like that, right?

  It certainly did for me.

I immediately though of weight loss when I read that.

How many times do we have more than 1 priority or more than 1 goal?

It reminds me of the famous saying that you can have it fast or cheap but you can’t have it both.

That usually holds true for many things in life.

So if you are 20 pounds overweight, your goal should be to lose weight. That’s it.

Not to lose weight AND increase your flexibility.

Not to lose weight AND increase your muscle tone.

Not to lose weight AND anything else that is not losing weight!

Yes, you will do certain things that will help you lose weight, but they will not take you away from the main goal of losing weight. They will only enhance your chances of losing weight.

  So what is your priority?

It’s got to be one thing.

It’s the one thing that is eating away at you, that bothers you during the day and keeps you up at night.

Whatever that is, that’s your #1 priority.

Start working on it every day until it’s taken care of.

Then when it’s taken care of, move on to your next priority.

  But not anytime before then.

Kevin
