Supplemental Info:
Since mid-November 2023, the Yemen-based, Iran-backed Houthi rebel group has attacked dozens of commercial ships transiting the Red Sea using missiles, UAVs, and explosives-laden boats. The resulting changes to shipping routes is now impacting global supply chains.
On Wednesday, the U.N. Security Council demanded Yemen's Houthis immediately end attacks on ships in the Red Sea. The Security Council resolution also called on the Houthis to release the Galaxy Leader, a Japanese-operated vehicle carrier linked to an Israeli businessman that the group commandeered on November 19, along with the 25-person crew.
Air defenses have been placed on high alert across the Middle East in anticipation of possible retaliation by Iran.
