Natural Disaster Alert – U.S. Embassy Manila (January 22, 2018)
Location: Vicinity of Mayon Volcano, located in Albay Province, approximately 300 kilometers southeast of Manila, on the island of Luzon.
Event: In light of increased seismic unrest, lava fountaining, and summit explosions, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology (PHIVOLCS) raised Mayon Vocano’s status from Alert Level 3 (increased tendency to hazardous eruption) to Alert Level 4 (hazardous eruption imminent). The Danger Zone has been extended to eight kilometers from the summit vent.
Actions to Take:
* U.S. citizens in the Philippines should exercise caution if contemplating travel in the vicinity of Mayon Volcano.
* PHIVOLCS strongly advises the public to be vigilant and to desist from entering the Danger Zone. * Monitor current conditions, maintain active awareness of local conditions, and especially refrain from unauthorized hiking in the Danger Zone. * Philippine civil aviation authorities advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from eruptions can be hazardous to aircraft. * Check with your airline for the latest flight information if you are traveling to/from Legazpi Airport.
