Weather Alert: Luzon (Philippines) (January 15, 2018) Weather Alert for Vicinity of Mayon Volcano Location: Vicinity of Mayon Volcano, Albay Province, Luzon, Philippines
Event: The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens in the Philippines to exercise caution if contemplating travel in the vicinity of the Mayon Volcano, located in Albay Province, approximately 300 kilometers southeast of Manila, on the island of Luzon. In light of ongoing volcanic and seismic activity, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued an Alert LEVEL 3 over Mayon Volcano. PHIVOLCS warns that the area is "currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days.”
Actions to Take:
* Be vigilant and, according to PHIVOLCS, “do not enter the six (6) kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southern flanks due to the danger of rock falls, landslides and sudden explosions or dome collapse that may generate hazardous volcanic flows."
* Those planning travel to the Mayon volcano region are encouraged to monitor current conditions, maintain active awareness of local conditions, and especially refrain from unauthorized hiking in the PDZ or EDZ.
* Continue to monitor local media as well as the PHIVOLCS web site for updates on the situation http://www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/ .
