US Embassy Niger issues security alert warning Americans in the capital to cont to shelter-in-place. National airspace, airport, and borders closed. See email.

Both the U.S. and France operate military bases in Niger as part of operations to disrupt jihadist group activity in the wider region. Niger became the main base for French troops after they were told to leave Mali following a 2021coup.


According to an update issued on 8/8 by the Department of Defense:


  • There are over 1000 U.S. troops stationed in Niger.

  • The force posture is unchanged.

Security Alert - US. Embassy Niamey, Niger

Location: Niamey


Event: The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to shelter in place, limit unnecessary movements around town, and continue to avoid transiting the downtown and Presidential Palace area. There may be an increase in security force presence in the downtown area (to monitor demonstrations) so it is important to be cautious, limit movement and avoid any protests. A curfew is in effect during evening hours for US. Embassy personnel.

Niger airspace is closed until further notice. The airport is closed and commercial flights to and from Niamey are suspended. Niger, borders are also closed.

The embassy is aware of reports of scarcity of cash and some goods. There is no information as to when scarce resources will be replenished. Please do your best to plan accordingly.

Please contact the U.S. Embassy for emergency U.S. citizen services.

  • Avoid the arca near the Presidential Palace.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Keep a low profile.

  • Avoid demonstrations.

  • Avoid crowds.

  • Notify friends and family of your safety.

  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.

  • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/Westerners.

  • Make contingency plans to leave. • Review your personal security plans.

  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.

  • Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Niger visa.
