SMS Alert Text:

US Embassy Mexico issues security alert following discovery of explosive device on ferry operating between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Supplemental Info:

Subscribers are reminded that on Feb 21, AlertsUSA warned subscribers of an explosion on a tourist ferry in Playa del Carmen resulting in injuries, including to U.S. citizens. At the time, media reports suggested explosion was result of a fuel leak, while Mexican law enforcement sources told AlertsUSA the investigation is leaning towards terrorism.

Subscribers are also reminded that in January, 2017, a lone gunman entered the Blue Parrot nightclub in Playa del Carmen and opened fire, killing 5 (including 1 American) and injuring 15.

Overall, drug cartel violence and homicides are on the rise across the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

Those considering travel to Mexico this Spring are urged to thoroughly review the U.S. State Department's LEVEL 2 Travel Advisory and U.S. Embassy Security messages.
