Destitute U.S. citizens who need assistance returning to the United States may apply for a repatriation loan. There are several important points to be aware of when considering a repatriation loan from the U.S. government.

  • The Department of State may be able to issue repatriation loans to destitute U.S. citizens for the purpose of returning to the United States.

  • A repatriation loan may cover transportation expenses, short-term food, lodging, and fees associated with travel to the United States.

  • If you apply for a repatriation loan, please understand that this is a loan; the U.S. Government expects you to pay it back over time, with interest, penalties, and other charges for late payment as directed by law and regulation.

  • A repatriation loan may be used to purchase a one-way ticket for return to the United States based on availability.

  • Current costs for one-way travel from Beirut to the United States may be higher than normal due to the limited availability of flights and the security situation in Lebanon.

  • If you apply for a loan, you will be required to sign a promissory note agreeing to repay the loan to the U.S. Government within a certain time period.

  • Until you have repaid your loan in full, you will only be eligible for a limited validity U.S. passport.

  • If your loan is in default, you will not be eligible for a full validity U.S. passport.

  • The Embassy remains open and continues to process emergency passports and repatriation loans, and to provide other emergency consular services. Please see information on What the U.S. Department of State Can and Can’t Do in a Crisis.
