Security Alert: Election-related Demonstrations

July 5, 2024

Activists and political associations have called for rallies and demonstrations nationwide on July 7, in response to the second round of French parliamentary elections. Although demonstrations occur regularly across France and are mostly peaceful, on rare occasions they have included violence and property damage, and police have responded with water cannons and tear gas. The Paris Prefecture has specifically determined the proposed demonstration in front of the Assemblée Nationale in Paris has the potential to become violent and has prohibited it from taking place.

Travelers are reminded to avoid demonstrations and areas of significant police activity, exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, and depart immediately if demonstrators are clashing with police or destroying property.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.

  • Exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

  • Monitor local media for updates.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Keep a low profile.

  • Notify friends and family of your safety.
