US Embassy Ecuador issues security alert following the assassination of a leading presidential candidate in Quito on 8/9. Low profile and incr awareness urged.

Location:   Ecuador

Event:  Following the assassination of Presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in Quito on August 09, 2023, President Lasso issued a decree declaring a two-month State of Emergency. The National Electoral Commission (CNE) has confirmed that the elections scheduled for August 20, 2023, will not be suspended. U.S. Embassy and Consulate services are not affected.

During this time, please take the following actions:

  • Monitor local media for updates.

  • Avoid demonstrations.

  • Avoid crowds.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Keep a low profile.

  • Enroll in Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.
