Exercise Increased Caution Regarding Attacks In Public Areas

U.S. Mission China

December 17, 2024

The U.S. Embassy and its Consulates in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) encourage all U.S. citizens in the PRC to exercise increased caution in public venues. Over the past several months there have been multiple reports of unprovoked attacks in public areas. Some incidents occurred in areas frequented by foreigners, including public parks or shopping areas, while others occurred near schools. The attacks include stabbings and driving vehicles into crowds. Both U.S. and Japanese citizens have been victims of some of these attacks.

Actions to Take:

  • Be aware of your surroundings particularly in crowded or public areas.

  • Adhere to emergency protocols and follow instructions of first responders.

  • Carry proper identification.

  • Carefully review the State Department’s PRC travel information page and the latest PRC travel advisory before deciding to travel.

We strongly recommend that U.S citizens in the PRC enroll i n the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security alerts. Including details about your intended destinations will help the Department of State locate you in an emergency.

Please Note: The Department of State recently launched an updated version of STEP . To continue receiving alerts, please re-enroll.
