Dispute w Colombia over deportation of illegals results in angered diplomatic exchange & reciprocal tariff threats. Low profile for Americans urged. See email.

Supplemental Info:

A diplomatic row has erupted between the U.S. and Colombia over the deportation and repatriation of illegal Colombian migrants.

Early Sunday, Colombia turned away two U.S. military aircraft carrying individuals removed under the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. This resulted in a stiff rebuke from the U.S. and threats of sweeping retaliatory measures, including tariffs, sanctions and travel bans.

Posting on his Truth Social forum, President Trump stated the following:

"We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!"

Supplemental Info Continued:

Colombia's President Gustavo Petro condemned the U.S. practice of repatriation using military aircraft, suggesting it treated migrants like criminals. Petro responded to Trump's threatened sanctions late this evening, saying that Colombia will impose reciprocal 50% tariffs on U.S. goods.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered a suspension of visa issuance at the U.S. Embassy Bogota consular section. Secretary Rubio is now authorizing travel sanctions on individuals and their families who were responsible for the interference of U.S. repatriation flight operations.

While neither the State Department nor U.S. Embassy have issued a formal security message related to these developments, AlertsUSA strongly encourages increased caution and a low profile if you are in or traveling to Colombia.

As the deportation effort expands in size and scope, travelers should anticipate and prepare for an increasingly dynamic security environment across the entire region.
