According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Ford security received a call from someone claiming to be a disgruntled employee. The caller claimed to be barricaded in bathroom on the second floor of the facility, armed with explosives and guns. The caller claimed to work in the painting department, but there was no employee with the given name.

Local media report other law enforcement sources as stating the call came in from a spoofed phone number.
