Approval of the mission comes approximately one year after the request by Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Kenya has initially offered 1000 personnel and will lead the mission. Several Caribbean nations have also offered to participate. The White House has pledged logistics and financial support.
While the resolution has been approved, the specifics, to include overall force size, ROE and timing have yet to be decided. As Haitian Creole and French are the two primary languages of Haiti, some training of foreign forces will be required.
The State Dept. has repeatedly warned Americans to avoid travel to Haiti and has ordered the departure of non-emergency US government personnel and family members.
The Dominican Republic closed all air, sea, and land borders with Haiti effective Friday, September 15.
