The buildup for U.S. military strikes in Syria is picking up speed.
Earlier this week, Russia's Foreign Ministry threatened to respond to any US missiles fired at Syria by shooting them down and targeting their launch sites.
Earlier this afternoon, Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s ambassador at the United Nations, said he “cannot exclude any possibilities” when asked about the danger of direct conflict between the US and Russia.
A short time ago the Cabinet of the United Kingdom gave Prime Minister Theresa May the green light for action on the Assad regime due to recent alleged use of chemical weapons.
Despite arm waving of the US media and some members of Congress, President Trump does not need approval of the legislative branch for this military action. According to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, an existing Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) for Syria already "gives him the authority." Multiple members of the Senate Armed Services Committee concur.
As this supplemental is being prepared, there is a significant multinational buildup of naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Earlier in the week, the European Aviation Safety Agency ( the EU equivalent to the FAA) issued a Rapid Alert Notification for Eastern Mediterranean / Nicosia FIR area stating the following:
"Due to the possible launch of air strikes into Syria with air-to-ground and / or cruise missiles within the next 72 hours, and the possibility of intermittent disruption of radio navigation equipment, due consideration needs to be taken when planning flight operations in the Eastern Mediterranean / Nicosia FIR area."
