Background:


  • Following last week's military coup, several European nations have begun evacuating their citizens from Niger.

  • The State Dept is compiling a list of U.S. citizens seeking assistance leaving the country. https://cacms.state.gov/s/crisis-intake

  • The West African regional bloc ECOWAS has given Niger’s coup leaders an ultimatum: One week to return the country to normal or face possible military intervention.

  • In response to ECOWAS, the governments of Mali and Burkina Faso have warned that any military intervention in Niger would be considered a "declaration of war" against their two countries.

Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Niger


Location: Niamey


Event: The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to shelter in place, limit unnecessary movements around town, and continue to avoid transiting the downtown and Presidential Palace area. There may be an increase in security force presence in the downtown area (to monitor demonstrations) so it is important to be cautious, limit movement and steer clear of any protests.

Borders and the airport remain closed and commercial flights to and from Niamey will reportedly be suspended until August 5, 2023.
