Supplemental Info:
House Speaker Mike Johnson invited President Trump to address a joint session of Congress on March 4. While technically this is not a State of the Union address, the event qualifies as a National Special Security Event (NSSE) with the U.S. Secret Service as the lead agency for planning. The event puts the President, his Cabinet, members of Congress, military leaders, top diplomats and Supreme Court justices all under the same roof at the same time. The speech will be broadcast live at 9:00 PM EASTERN on major U.S. broadcast television networks and online. Given the high public profile, NSSEs are potentially attractive targets for threat actors. While federal law enforcement state there are no specific credible threats to the event, security on Capitol Hill will be tight following a series of high-profile threats and violence aimed at President Trump and other political figures. Over 20 local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety partners from across the National Capital Region will be assisting with securing the event, including counter-sniper teams, uniformed and plainclothes officers, and bomb-sniffing dogs. A "designated survivor" is selected from the Cabinet who is moved to a secure location during the speech and is prepared to take over the responsibilities of the President in the event catastrophe strikes the Capitol while most government leaders are inside. At least one Supreme Court justice is typically also in a safe location away from the Capitol.
