The protests were held in response to President Trump's recent announcement regarding recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Demonstrators called the US "the enemy of Palestine" and the the US embassy in Beirut "a symbol of imperialist aggression" which must be closed.

Like many US embassies around the world, security messages had been issued warning of the possibility of protests and the need for US citizens to exercise caution and increase personal security awareness.
