Supplemental Info:
Opposing groups plan to gather tonight (8/30) at the site of UNC’s toppled Silent Sam Confederate monument (McCorkle Place, upper quad area). Established in 1913, the statue atop the monument was knocked down on 8/20/2018 during leftist protest. An alternative monument was quickly erected in it's place with banners reading, "For a world without white supremacy."
Right-leaning ACTBAC (Alamance County Taking Back Alamance County) plans an evening gathering at the site of the fallen statue at 8 p.m.
The usual assortment of left-leaning groups including Antifa, BLM and others have promised counter-protests.
Although a heavy police presence is expected, the potential for violent clashes is high, both on campus as well in downtown Chapel Hill.
Readers are reminded that an April 2016 assessment by DHS and the FBI classified the left-wing group Antifa as "domestic terrorists." The assessment highlights the group as responsible for attacks on police, government and political institutions, along with any other symbols of the "capitalist system" or displays of racism, social injustice or fascism.
Over the last two years, the tempo and severity of Antifa clashes with right-leaning groups and law enforcement have increased significantly.
Caution is urged if you are in vicinity of tonight's gathering.
