On Apr 21, 2017, 39-year-old French national Karim Cheurfi parked his automobile behind a Paris police van on the Champs Elysees only 300 meters from the Arc de Triomphe. Dressed in black clothing, Cheurfin exited his vehicle with a AK-47 rifle and opened fire on the van, killing one police officer and injuring two others before he himself was shot dead.
The Islamic State's Amaq News agency formally claimed responsibility for the attack.
