Readers are reminded that the Islamic State has previously claimed responsibility for several attacks on music venues:
1 Oct 2017: Nevada resident Stephen Paddock fired more than 1,100 rounds into the Route 91 Harvest music festival from his suite on the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel, killing 58 and leaving 851 injured from gunfire and the resulting mass panic.
The original claim of responsibility read as follows:
“Responding to the call of [Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi] to target the states of the Crusader alliance, and after careful observation of gatherings of the Crusaders in the US city of Las Vegas, one of the soldiers of the caliphate (Abu Abd al-Bar al-Amriki, may Allah accept him) lay hidden armed with machine guns and various ammunition in a hotel overlooking a concert”
“He opened fire on their gathering, leaving 600 killed and injured, until his ammunition was finished and he departed as a martyr.”
To date, the official narrative states that the suspect acted alone and had no ties to the Islamic State (though significant evidence suggests otherwise).
22 May 2017: A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in a foyer outside Manchester Arena in the UK killing 22 and injuring 59 following a show by US singer Ariana Grande. The incident is the largest terrorist attack in the UK since the 7/7 bombings in 2005.
24 July 2016: A failed asylum seeker from Syria blew himself up and injured 12 others after being turned away from the Ansbach Open festival in Southern Germany. The 27-year old man was refused entry for not having a ticket before detonating a home made bomb at the entrance to the event.
12 June 2016: Omar Mateen, a 29-year old security guard swearing allegiance to the Islamic State, opened fire at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. killing 49 and injuring 53.
13 Nov 2015: Islamic State gunman killed 89 concertgoers at the Bataclan theatre as part of a coordinated attack on Paris that claimed 130 lives and injured 368. The attack took place during a set by US rock band Eagles of Death Metal. The gunmen took hostages inside the venue before being shot or blowing themselves up in the ensuing police raid.
