Supplemental Info:
After Southern California experienced its most powerful earthquake in decades on Independence Day, an even stronger temblor shook the region late Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit 11 miles north-northeast of Ridgecrest, California, shortly after 8 p.m. PDT. Over 1000 aftershocks have followed this powerful earthquake.
The threat of additional high magnitude quakes remains, not only for California, but OR and WA as well. As such, it is essential that residents in earthquake-prone areas have a plan in place in the event a dangerous seismic event occurs.
Most important in these preparedness plans is a "bolt bag" or "go bag." This is an small pack with essential items needed to help you through 2-3 days in the event of a major seismic event resulting in significant structural or infrastructure damage.
A little bit of effort up front can be the difference between you dealing with an emergency in relative calm knowing your basic needs are met, or joining the pleading masses we have all seen on television demanding to know when FEMA will show up.
The kit you prepare should be easily accessible on your way out the door, eliminating the need of attempting to gather items while trying to evacuate a shaking structure.
Something in your home, as well as in your auto (for when you are away from home) is a no-brainer.
Buy it and add your own personal necessities, or pull it together from things already in your home. Just do it.
If you live near elderly or handicapped individuals, it would be an exceedingly kind gesture to visit and help them prepare something for themselves. They will be forever grateful for you looking out for their well being.
