UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Erdogan are in Ukraine, in part, to push for access by IAEA inspectors to evaluate damage, repairs, and operational conditions at the plant. Russia, at least so far, says no. Russia has also called United Nations demands for demilitarization of the plant "unacceptable."
Ukraine's authorities have been performing radiological disaster response drills yesterday and today in the event of a catastrophic incident at the plant.
During a press briefing earlier today at Russia's Defense Ministry, Lt-Gen Igor Kirillov (head of Russia’s radiological, chemical & biological defense forces) stated that the plant's backup support systems were damaged during the shelling. A disaster at the plant, they say, would see radioactive material covering large parts of Europe including Germany, Ukraine, Poland and Slovakia.
Keep in mind that propaganda is an active component of warfare and accusations are flying from both sides.
AlertsUSA continues to monitoring developments at the plant and will report any significant changes to subscribers as events warrant.
