AlertsUSA reminds subscribers of numerous recent warnings from the U.S. and foreign governments regarding the heightened risk of terrorist attacks:
In mid-December, a DHS/DOJ joint intelligence bulletin sent to law enforcement nationwide warned that groups like al Qaeda and ISIS will likely use the Israel-Hamas war “to increase calls for violence in the U.S. during the holiday season compared to prior years.” The bulletin states the likely “primary targets” could include churches, synagogues and members of the Jewish community.
In mid-December, the Netherlands raised their terrorism threat indicator to the 4th of 5 levels, or SUBSTANTIAL, indicating a "real chance" of a terrorist attack in the country. The move followed the rollup of a Hamas-linked terror cell in the Netherlands and Germany.
In early December, FBI Director Wray warned Congress and the nation that the terror threat facing the U.S. has reached "unprecedented levels."
In late-November, the London Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command warned the public to be extra vigilant during the holidays. The UK's internal security service, MI5, places the current terrorism threat level for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland at SUBSTANTIAL, meaning "an attack is likely."
In mid-November, Rep. Mark Green, MD (R-TN), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, warned Congress and the nation about the scope of threats facing the U.S., stating "this is one of the most dangerous times in the history of the United States."
In mid-October, the French government elevated its Vigipirate security alert system to the highest level following a terrorist attack in the city of Arras. Belgium also raised their terror alert level in the Brussels Capital Region to 4, indicating a "very serious threat of attack".
In mid-October, the US State Dept issued a Worldwide Caution (which remains in effect), warning of the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests abroad.
Regardless of if you are in the U.S. or abroad, it is important to remember that terrorists historically focus on tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities as viable targets for attack. In addition, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, high-profile events, schools, airports, and other soft targets also remain priority targets for possible attacks. Readers should exercise a high level of vigilance in these and similar locations, particularly during the remainder of the holidays and any public events.
If you are abroad:
