Antifa (short for “antifascist”) is a loose collection of groups, networks and individuals who believe in violent, direct action opposition to right-wing (and increasingly, conservative) movements.
Their historical ideology is built on the assumption that the Nazi party would never have been able to come to power in Germany if people had more aggressively fought them in the streets in the 1920s and 30s.
Most modern Antifa supporters in the U.S. identify as being far left, liberal and social democrats, anti-government, anti-capitalists, socialists and communists.
There are increasing alliances with LGBTQ, Black Lives Matter, social justice, and illegal immigrant rights groups.
Like other protest movements dating back to Cold War era West German anarchists, Antifa supporters will frequently dress in all black clothing, often covering their faces with masks or helmets so they can’t be identified by opposing groups or the police. This tactic allows the participants to move together as one anonymous group.
In the U.S, Antifa has grown significantly more dangerous since the election of Donald Trump as President.
