Supplemental Info:
The City of Akron is preparing for protests as state attorneys present evidence to a Summit County grand jury to decide whether to indict any of eight Akron, Ohio police officers involved in the June, 2022 death of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old black male who was shot 46 times by police following a high-speed car chase and foot pursuit.
Reported evidence supports the claim that Walker fired a handgun at police during the incident.
Downtown businesses have been boarding up windows and entryways. Fencing has been installed around the Stubbs Justice Center / Akron Police Dept. and the Summit County Courthouse in downtown Akron (pin on the map).
The June 2022 incident resulted in weeks of protests, deployment of state troopers for riot control, and significant damage to the downtown area.
Akron also experienced multiple rounds of protests and violence following the 2020 George Floyd incident.
Caution is urged in Akron in the coming days. Depending on the level of mainstream coverage, protests are likely to spread to other cities as well.
