ATF reports latest Austin bomb used trip wire as initiator, urges increased vigilance and awareness for suspicious objects and packages. See email for more.

Supplemental Info:

Austin authorities completed a press conference a short time ago during which the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed the latest Austin bomb was initiated using a trip wire.

In this design, the increase or decrease in tension on the wire or filament triggers the device.

In this instance, the explosive device was not left on a porch (thus targeting a specific person or residence), but adjacent to a fence in a well trafficked residential area, making the targeting more random.

Authorities urge residents to increase their vigilance and awareness for suspicious objects and packages. While this is not the most comprehensive or helpful guidance, realistically there is little else authorities can recommend given the circumstances.

Authorities are also urging residents in the area local to the explosion to provide copies of any surveillance videos / still imagery to assist in  possible identification and tracking of the perpetrator.

Regardless of your location, motion activated video cameras are always a solid security consideration for your home or business. If not helping to mitigate risk and increase safety, they can be extremely helpful in capturing information valuable in resolving crimes or adding clarity to incidents.
