Subject: Hi, Friend! Holistic is the name of the game ❤️‍🩹🌴🧵

Let's talk community confidence, baby trees and excellent embroidery…

Hi Friend,

If you’ve been looking for a sign to kick off 2023 somewhere different, this is it ☀️

Places on our January and April Conservation Research trips are open - why don’t you join us?  Conservation activity is on the up in Sainte Luce as the team start nurturing the new saplings in the Palms nursery 🌴, we’ve seen an encouraging increase in the use of women’s health services, and the Stitch Sainte Luce Cooperative have been working hard ahead of the Christmas season to put some new products on the table… pun completely intended! Scroll on for more of this month’s news 👇

Morning walk to the bush for the SCRP group

Start 2023 beside the sea...

… among the trees and under the stars!

Our January conservation research programme is open, and we’d love you to join us! Being immersed in the biodiversity hotspot of southeast Madagascar and working on a variety of cutting-edge conservation projects is an unparalleled opportunity for both experienced conservationists and nature enthusiasts alike. From conducting microhabitat assessments of endangered palms to searching for rare chameleons and geckos on a night survey, to monitoring lemur populations and measuring survival rates of our reforestation project there are endless opportunities. Volunteers are crucial for the continuation of our projects; without volunteers we simply do not have the capacity to continue our conservation work.

Tempted? This blog from a recent volunteer and our volunteering video should

have you convinced!

Beneficiaries in the Manambaro community

Health for women 💪👩🏽‍⚕️

Since SEED began the food distribution work in February 2021, wider public health messages on nutrition and handwashing have been an essential part of our work. Recently we expanded this to include family planning.

Discussions with health workers and women showed that although women were keen to use family planning, many struggled to access services or were fearful of long-term side effects. Since training local community health workers and supporting a voucher scheme in 10 clinics, 1,418 women have accessed advice and services with 31% of these being new users. The new training and information sessions have been such a success we have already expanded to 8 further clinics.

Seedlings thriving in the Project Palms nursery

Preventing peril for Palm populations 🌴

The backdrop to tropical paradise, Palm trees are prevalent in many warmer countries.

However, in the southeast of Madagascar, six species of palm tree are currently on the IUCN Red List. All poorly understood, and threatened by pressures that include habitat loss, fire and human dependence on resources, these six species play a crucial part of the ecosystem in Sainte Luce. Project Palms is well underway, completing a population census and starting to foster a nursery of new saplings for transplantation!

With delicate roots, the saplings have to be carefully looked after, but with over 5,000 seeds planted we’re confident we’ll have a nursery full of greenery before long! 🌱

Looking for a change of scenery? We’re hiring! See where you could fit into the team here.
