Tips for Smoking Bees Properly
Tip #1: Never use any bee smoker fuel with ink on it or tape
Tip #2: These natural bee smoker fuel alternatives are great too:
grass-fed cow dung, horse manure and other organic type sources of manure like mulch grass where pesticides are not used or limited.
Tip #3: Pack a box of matches and a lighter so you always have a back-up plan in your bee tool kit when you get to your apiary site.
Tip #4: Always smoke across the top of the chamber you are working on and not down into the frames.
Tip #5: Use smoke sparingly as it will taint the unripe honey stored in the comb as well as having over smoked bees may result in them becoming more aggressive, rather than calming them.
Tip #6: ALWAYS ensure you put out your embers and or smoker fuel when you empty it on site. Fires cause hundreds of thousands of Rands of damage a year and as beekeepers we want to avoid contributing to that destructive outcome.
