In December, 2005, our daughter was having a difficult pregnancy. My husband and I had been out for some Christmas shopping. Along the drive to the stores, I remembered that the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe was at a past exit. So, I asked my husband to turn around so we could stop at the Shrine to inquire if I could get my Saint Gianna prayer card replaced. I had given my last prayer card to a friend who was undergoing chemotherapy. I needed the prayer card for our daughter at a very difficult time in her pregnancy.
When we stopped in, the shrine Gift Store salesperson looked around but could not locate any more Saint Gianna prayer cards touched to her relic. The salesperson offered to page Pat Krause, but I told her not to bother Pat. After looking around the Gift Shop for a while longer, I decided to ask the salesperson to page Pat. She asked me if it was an emergency, and I asked her what she meant by an emergency. Pat explained that when women are experiencing difficulties in their pregnancies, they come to the Shrine to touch Saint Gianna’s relics.
On Saturday, December 24, I remembered what Pat Krause had said. On Sunday, December 25, our whole family was at our home for Christmas, our daughter was still having problems. I took her aside to talk to her about the Shrine and asked her if I could arrange for her to touch Saint Gianna’s relics, would she like to go there. She said, “Yes.” She had an ultrasound on Monday. If they could see the baby’s heartbeat, she would call me. Then, I would make the arrangement for the visit to touch Saint Gianna’s relics. On Monday, December 26, my son-in-law called to say, “The little heart light was beating!”
I immediately called the Shrine, the young woman remembered me and transferred me to Pat. Pat also remembered my request. I explained what happened, and I said to her, “There is no such thing as coincidence is there?” Her reply was, “Not at the Shrine.”
Our daughter is a school teacher and had vacation that whole week. She and I had talked about going on either Thursday and Friday, and as she lives two hours away from La Crosse, we felt that we could be there by 11 a.m. When I asked Pat about arranging the date and time, she said, “It will have to be Friday, because Sister Christa Marie won’t be back until then. Se we arranged to come at 11 a.m. for Mass and the relics would be brought out after that.
On Friday, December 30, three family members accompanied our daughter and her unborn child to Mass in the Pilgrim’s Chapel at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Mass was celebrated by Father Joseph Hirsch, and it happened to be the Feast of the Holy Family. Our daughter was given a special blessing after Mass by Father Hirsch and was given the privilege of touching the relics of Saint Gianna. Seven months and one day later at 10:51 a.m. after a 1 hour and 51 -minute labor, Benjamin David was born. He weighed 8 lbs. and was 20.5” long.
For our dear “Gianna Baby,” thanks be to Our Heavenly Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.; Our Lady of Guadalupe, Protectress of the unborn; and Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, patroness of difficult pregnancies. In addition, our grateful thanks to Father Hirsch, Pat Krause, and Sister Christa Marie at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

May my life, from now on, be a sign of my gratefulness. Amen.
