Subject: How do you stop worrying about unions?

Every day it seems like there is another announcement of how the government is plans to bail out unions. They've cut election times by a third. They want to force you to report what you pay to your lawyer or consultant. The latest proposal demands that if you speak to your employees about unions that you have to invite union organizers onto your property to sell the union to your employees.

This is nothing short of a gag order on companies. What can you do?

As I teach in my book Left of Boom, if you are reacting to union organizing you are already too late. The bottom line is the government can change the rules all they want, if your employees don't want a union in the first place you win. Every time.

But how do you do that? Simple. Approachable leaders.

Think about it. Who is more likely to sign a union card (electronic or otherwise):
  • A happy employee or a disgruntled one?
  • Someone who thinks their boss is a jerk or someone who loves their boss?
  • A person who is looking to abandon ship, or someone who can't imagine working anywhere else?
The research at this point is undeniable: Employees of approachable leaders are 89% more likely to be happy. They rave about their boss. They are 72% less likely to think about quitting. Not only that, they are way more likely to go above and beyond at work.

That means happier, more productive employees who will tell a union organizer to get lost if they are ever approached.
