MARCHINGTON MUSIC CLUB (SUNDAYS FROM 5.30PM)
Life after the beer festival goes on and we keep up the heat with an incredible act making their debut at the music club, expect something a little left field than normal from the excellent JO CARLEY & THE OLD DRY SKULLS!! Read on...
Jo Carley and The Old Dry Skulls throw Old Time Roots music, Ska and Punk into a backwoods still to make musical moonshine!
Fronted by Jo Carley and backed by her song writing partner and husband Tim Carley, they are joined by an assortment of double bass players and other weirdos they meet on the road. Sometimes nicknamed the 'Carley Twins' because of their long dread locks and shared obsessions with creepy music and dark imagery, this pair have created a sound of their own!
The driving force is Tim’s One-man-band set-up with Kick-drum, hi-hat and guitar while Jo’s vocal delivery sounds like the leader of Satan's own gospel choir. This is made even more bewitching as she switches from fiddle to mandolin to washboard. Possessing an energy that elevates the audience, this duo sound more like a stompin 5 piece band.
Visually the band are extremely unique too. Mixing up traditional old time country roots instruments with a punk attitude and artwork created by the guys themselves. Dreadlocks and archtop acoustic guitars, Motorhead shirts and Mandolins, skeletons with washboards. You need to watch this space for two new videos for ‘Contemplate Your Moves’ and ‘Dance ‘til You’re Dead’ filmed and directed by the amazing Mark Richards (Wonk Unit, Maid Of Ace, Slaves) coming very soon!
A band that lives to perform, Jo Carley & The Old Dry Skulls have been touring extensively up and down the UK at some of the best festivals and clubs on the circuit. They play live either as a duo or as a three piece with Hawkeye Houlihan or James Le Huray joining on double bass. They are looking forward to taking their new album across the UK, Europe and beyond, so come and shake your bones in appreciation!
The final word goes to Jo Carley herself, "We write the music that we ourselves want to hear". There's no pandering and no love songs. It's in your face, sometimes fast but always dark and interesting.

AND NOW A MESSAGE TO A COUPLE OF CONCERNED LOCALS………………..
DEAR "NIMBY’S "(NOT IN MY BACK YARD)
A recent call from the local pub licensing department, I was informed there was concern from a couple of residents about the forthcoming MELEE, music & beer festival, the one loved and enjoyed by most and been running for the past five and a half years!
I am here to inform you that the event will follow the same format as it ALWAYS has and the event’s music programme on the two nights we use the Marquee will finish around 11pm (please don’t stand in your front rooms with a stop watch-it’s not an exact science), out of respect for the residents and the fact the posters say until midnight- that means we will continue to serve beer in the pub until then an hour after the music has stopped (we are actually licensed until 1am but again we do this out of respect for the neighbours and also by midnight we’ve had enough after a long day.
All this could have quite easily have been answered by calling 820394 as opposed to wasting the time of a phone call (oh I forgot you have lots of time on your hands) to be told by said officers that I am doing everything by the book and actually complying with my rights-which bring me to the maths………….
Public houses have always been granted the right to x amount of outside functions a year, it used to be around 8, I have been informed this may now be as many as 12. Bearing in mind one event can last up to 96 hours (4 days) per function, there is the legal potential for 48 days worth a year!!!!
I have never applied for more than three or four outside functions in a single year (a lot of time and effort goes into one event alone), this year there is ONE festival, lasting TWO days, so rest assured I won’t be applying for the other 46 days so I think the moaners have a great deal.
So can I suggest less curtain twitching and getting out and enjoying the big wide world and try respecting other peoples interests, also you live near a pub for christ’s sake!
