Subject: What will we learn about NYC schools in 2018-2019?

The Research Alliance for New York City Schools
School is back in session!
Our team at the Research Alliance is excited to begin the 2018-2019 school year—our 10th year conducting research for and about New York City’s public schools. Together with teachers and school leaders, community organizations, colleagues at the NYC Department of Education, CUNY and elsewhere, we are documenting school conditions and trends and building evidence about the policies and practices that promote students’ development and academic success. Among the projects that we are most energized about this year:
  • The Research Alliance’s new equity, access and diversity series, which is exploring areas of progress as well as stubborn barriers to equity in NYC’s schools. The first study in this series examined the experiences and outcomes of “persisting students”—that is, students who don’t graduate on time, but remain enrolled in a NYC high school, working toward their degree. The next study will focus on strategies that elementary schools are using to support homeless students.
  • Our evaluation of Career Technical Education in New York City, which is documenting how CTE programs are implemented, and how they affect students’ career and work-related learning experiences, social and behavioral competencies, high school graduation, and transitions to college and the labor market.
  • Our efforts to measure and support students' social and emotional learning, particularly through our partnership with the Student Success Network—a group of about 50 youth development and education nonprofits, serving 150,000 middle and high school students throughout the City.
  • Our collaboration with Metro Center to learn about the Internationals Network for Public Schools and to identify promising practices for serving recently arrived immigrant students.
  • Our study of Border Crossers’ anti-racism training for educators.
  • Our evaluation of the City’s ambitious Computer Science for All initiative and other studies of CS education, including our work with the Maker Partnership.
  • The continuation of Spotlight on NYC Schools, our series of short, descriptive data analyses and visualizations designed to promote data-informed discussion and stoke interest in important new research questions.
We look forward to sharing findings from these and other studies in the coming year. To stay connected with our work—and provide feedback on our evolving research agenda—follow the Research Alliance on TwitterWishing you a fun and productive school year!
