Voices in Urban Education: The Boys Aren’t Broken, The Systems Are
The Research Alliance is pleased to share new work published in Voices in Urban Education, “The Boys Aren’t Broken, The Systems Are: Changing the Narrative about Young Men of Color.”

Many educators and researchers around the country are developing asset-based approaches to their work with young men of color. This issue of Voices in Urban Education explores such efforts, building on a 2017 conference, sponsored by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and organized by the Research Alliance, in partnership with the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University. The conference convened researchers and practitioners from seven cities to share information about system-level strategies to improve outcomes for Black and Latino young men, including efforts to challenge deficit mindsets and implicit bias, nurture healthy and respectful relationships, and promote culturally relevant practices in schools. This VUE issue features articles written by conference participants.

Research Alliance Deputy Director Dr. Adriana Villavicencio and Dr. Rosann Tung of NYU’s Metro Center authored “Disrupting Structural Racism: Counter-Narratives of Pride, Growth, and Transformation”. In addition, Expanded Success Initiative Director Paul Forbes and Research Alliance Analyst Sarah Klevan authored, “My Brother’s Keeper: Nurturing In-School Relationships for Young Men of Color in New York City.”
