New Spotlight Examines How Attendance Rates Have Changed Over Time in NYC Schools

In the second post in our five-part Spotlight series examining progress and disparities in New York City schools, we focus on trends in student attendance. This post explores rates of attendance and chronic absenteeism each year between 2000 and 2018, including citywide averages, as well as differences associated with neighborhood income and race.
Chronic absentee rates over time, by race/ethnicity
Our analyses reveal important improvements in attendance, as well as persistent disparities along racial and socioeconomic lines—disparities that are especially important to address in light of the well established links between attendance and students’ learning outcomes.
