New Spotlight Explores Student Mobility in New York City Schools

Student mobility – or the movement of students from school to school – is pervasive across urban school districts in the United States. High rates of mobility can negatively affect both students and schools.

The most recent post in our Spotlight series examines trends in student mobility for multiple cohorts of NYC elementary school students. It also considers how these trends have varied for different subgroups of students. The post concludes by raising additional questions about student mobility, including factors that lead families to change schools and the potential impact of these changes for students and their school communities.

The Research Alliance Co-Hosts Conference on Systemwide Approaches to Address Issues in Education for Black and Latino Young Men

The Research Alliance and the Annenberg Institute for School Reform, with support from the American Educational Research Association (AERA), hosted a two-day event to explore systemwide strategies aimed at creating better educational outcomes for Black and Latino young men. The convening brought together researchers and practitioners from Austin, Boston, Chicago, Guilford (North Carolina), Minneapolis, New York City, and Oakland. Co-moderators Dr. Adriana Villavicencio of the Research Alliance and Dr. Rosann Tung of NYU’s Metro Center emphasized the importance of engaging both practitioners and researchers to advance knowledge about how to best meet the socio-emotional and educational needs of Black and Latino young men. The conference included discussions on topics such as dismantling racism, best practices for research-practice partnerships, teacher preparation for educating male students of color, and restorative approaches to student discipline. Attendees were able to share their experiences at the conference and engage online through the #AERAblm17 Twitter hashtag.
