Pursuing Equity in NYC Schools:
Progress, Challenges, and the Road Ahead

Monday, April 29, 2019, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

NYU’s Kimmel Center, Room 912-914 Silver

60 Washington Square South, New York, NY

Over the last two decades, New York City schools have experienced remarkable, sustained improvement, including dramatic decreases in dropout rates and increases in high school graduation and college enrollment. Yet deep inequality continues to plague the City’s education system. What will be required in the next decade—in terms of policy, practice and research—to ensure more equitable learning opportunities and outcomes for NYC students?

As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Research Alliance for New York City Schools, we are convening thought leaders to explore factors that have led to system-wide improvements, as well as barriers that have made it difficult to move the needle on longstanding inequalities.

Please join us for a presentation by the Research Alliance’s Executive Director, James Kemple, followed by a panel discussion, featuring:
  • Richard Carranza, NYC Schools Chancellor
  • Chris Emdin, Associate Professor, Teachers College, Columbia University
  • Shael Polakow-Suransky, President, Bank Street College of Education
  • Meisha Ross-Porter, Executive Superintendent for the Bronx
  • Adriana Villavicencio, Deputy Director, Research Alliance (moderator)
The discussion will illuminate a variety of perspectives and highlight important new directions for future work.

Space is limited. Please RSVP today.
