The Research Alliance for New York City Schools
Reflections on 2016
This year, the Research Alliance worked with thousands of students, educators, policymakers, funders, and community leaders, as we developed and carried out studies on topics that matter to New York City's public schools. We are grateful to the many partners who made this work possible. Among the highlights from our 2016:

Reporting new findings, including:
  • Schools as Organizations, which examines how changes in key aspects of schools’ organizational capacity (e.g., leadership, collaboration, safety) were related to teacher turnover and student achievement in 278 NYC middle schools.
  • Preparing for Evaluation, which draws on our work with the Teagle Foundation to highlight challenges and lessons for initiatives that are interested in rigorous evaluation.
  • Bridging the Gap, which describes a set of NYC Department of Education initiatives designed to bring ed-tech companies and the users of their products together, and presents lessons learned from the DOE’s efforts.
  • School Closures in New York City, an article in Education Next summarizing findings from a Research Alliance study that examined how closing 29 low-performing NYC high schools affected students’ academic performance, attendance, and mobility.
Informing public conversations about education through:
Engaging with educators and students, in part by:
  • Visiting over 65 schools, surveying over 14,000 students, and collaborating with 45  community-based organizations as part of our our evaluations of NYC’s Expanded Success Initiative and the iMentor College Ready Program, as well as our collaboration with the Student Success Network.
  • Working with high school students participating in the Coro Youth Leadership Academy to explore survey design and analysis.
  • Co-hosting a forum exploring college transfer policies, practices, and research within the CUNY system. The event featured four CUNY presidents and brought together students, faculty, administrators, researchers, and others to share ideas across roles and institutions about how to better support students through the transfer process.
We look forward to continuing to learn together in 2017. Many thanks for your ongoing interest and support of our work, and wishing you a warm and wonderful holiday season.
