On Tuesday, September 10th, Research Alliance Executive Director Dr. James Kemple testified at a hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives' Education and the Workforce Committee, "Education Research: Exploring Opportunities to Strengthen the Institute of Education Sciences."
In his remarks, Dr. Kemple described "important changes" fostered by the Institute of Education Sciences, including the development of "a new generation of researchers and research organizations... equipped to meet... high standards of evidence" and a shift in "the way federal, state, and local policymakers evaluate and use education research."
He also suggested four principles that should guide Congress in strengthening the Institute, which he dubbed "the four Ps": Preserving scientific rigor, prioritizing research that is more relevant to policymakers and educators, promoting wider use and application of research findings, and preparing for the future by continuing investments in pre- and post-doctoral training programs and methodological and professional development. Committee members expressed a great deal of interest in the Research Alliance’s work. Rep. George Miller, the Senior Democrat on the Committee, called it "a model from which Congress, and the country, can learn a great deal."
