New Spotlight Post Identifies Where Puerto Rican Students and Families Live in New York City

Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated Puerto Rican homes, infrastructure, and lives. New York City district officials have already indicated that they are preparing for a large influx of students fleeing the aftermath of the hurricanes.

The most recent post in our Spotlight series highlights the percentage of New Yorkers with Puerto Rican heritage in each census tract. In several of the maps, we show schools that are located in these areas of the City and indicate whether or not each school is currently above its intended capacity. Given the inevitable need for additional support for Puerto Rican students and their families, this Spotlight post can provide insight on what areas in New York City may need the most support, and where it's best to direct outreach services.

Research Alliance in the News

The Research Alliance authored a post in Education Week’s “Urban Education Reform: Bridging Research and Practice” blog series. Our post, "4 Key Strategies for Improving School Culture for Black and Latino Male Students", highlights findings from our report, Strategies for Improving School Culture: Educator Reflections on Transforming the High School Experience for Black and Latino Young Men, and discusses our evaluation of the Expanded Success Initiative (ESI) and the efforts selected schools in the initiative used to strengthen school culture. High School for Law and Public Service assistant principal Alexandra Brown provided a practitioner's response in "How a High School Transformed Its School Culture" and reflected on the positive outcomes of implementing ESI strategies at her school to strengthen school culture for Black and Latino young men.

New Project: Evaluating CTE in New York City High Schools

The Research Alliance has begun our evaluation of Career Technical Education (CTE) in New York City schools. CTE aims to prepare students for a wide variety of careers in an evolving job market. In collaboration with MDRC and the University of Connecticut, the Research Alliance will conduct several studies related to the implementation and impact of New York City’s CTE programs, and expects the findings to produce valuable insights and lessons for the NYC DOE and other schools districts around the country that are implementing and developing their own CTE programs.
The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is a nonpartisan research center housed at the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The Research Alliance conducts rigorous studies on topics that matter to the city’s public schools. The organization strives to advance equity and excellence in education by providing evidence about policies and practices that promote students' development and academic success.
