| New Publications from the Expanded Success Initiative Evaluation: Report and Guides Highlight Educators’ Efforts to Enhance Support for Young Men of Color |
|
Beginning in 2012, New York City’s Expanded Success Initiative (ESI) provided 40 NYC high schools with financial resources and professional development to help them create or expand supports for Black and Latino young men. As part of the Research Alliance’s ongoing evaluation of ESI, we have conducted hundreds of interviews and focus groups with staff in all 40 of these schools, as well a set of in-depth case studies, gaining a unique perspective on educators’ efforts to strengthen their school’s culture for young men of color. |
| Three new publications highlight strategies that principals, teachers, and guidance counselors in ESI schools see as particularly important for creating a school environment that welcomes and supports Black and Latino male students, with a focus on helping them prepare for college.
Our new guides for educators focus on two strategies: culturally relevant education and early exposure to and preparation for college. Based on case studies in five ESI schools, the guides present concrete tips, discussion questions, and tools for other educators who may want to pursue similar approaches. And, a new report, Strategies for Improving School Culture, highlights ESI schools’ efforts to strengthen school culture in four key areas:
- Developing culturally relevant education;
- Adopting restorative approaches to discipline;
- Promoting strong relationships in school; and
- Providing early support for postsecondary goals.
Together, these new publications show how educators in ESI schools used varied strategies to work toward the common goal of better supporting young men of color. |
