New Spotlight: Who Chooses Career and Technical Education in NYC?Building on our recent post about the supply of career and technical education (CTE) in New York City, our new Spotlight examines the characteristics of students who are interested in attending a CTE program. Looking at more than 350,000 students who participated in NYC’s high school choice process between 2008 and 2017, we found that well over three quarters of students included at least one CTE program on their application. Our analyses explored different levels of “CTE interest” (based on the number and ranking of CTE programs on each application), and found notable differences associated with students’ race/ethnicity, gender, and home borough. For example, as shown below, students living Queens and Staten Island had higher levels of CTE interest than those in The Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn—reflecting, at least in part, differences in the supply of CTE programs near students’ homes. |

Our post also explores CTE interest by poverty, English Language Learner status, and special education. This series is part of a larger project that is leveraging the size and diversity of NYC’s CTE system to learn about the conditions under which CTE programs are most effective.
