Exploring Overall Student Enrollment and the Size of Student Sub-Groups in the Four Largest U.S. Cities
What does it mean to be the nation’s largest school district? As New York City students, educators, and district leaders begin the school year, our new Spotlight post seeks to answer this question by comparing New York City to the nation’s next three largest urban school districts: Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. |
| We find that the student population in NYC is larger than the combined student populations of LA and Chicago. Only when we add the total school population of Houston do the three cities exceed NYC’s school enrollment.
This Spotlight post also explores the size of student subgroups within each district. An interactive graphic allows readers to compare the number and percentage of students with disabilities, English Language Learners, high school students, and groups defined by race/ethnicity, across the four districts. We learn about differences in the composition of schools in each city, and raise some questions about what NYC’s massive size means for policymakers, practitioners and researchers. |
| Revisiting: Where Do Puerto Rican Students Live in New York City?
In September 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated Puerto Rican homes, infrastructure, and lives. Given that NYC has the largest Puerto Rican population of any city in the world, we knew that families, schools and neighborhoods here were likely to be affected. Our Spotlight post highlighted where Puerto Rican students live in the City, the schools that serve high-concentration Puerto Rican neighborhoods, and whether or not these schools were already overcrowded. Our goal was to inform discussions about how best to support these students and school communities in the wake of the storms.
