How Equitable is Access to a Positive School Climate in NYC Schools?

This post is the third in a series exploring indicators of equity in NYC schools. The current analysis leverages student survey responses related to key dimensions of school climate, including safety, teaching and learning, and interpersonal relationships. The post examines how school-wide perceptions of school climate vary by race/ethnicity, finding that Black students, in particular, appear to attend schools with climates that are rated lower on average.

Developing Measures of Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Practices in Computer Science

Many Computer Science for All initiatives around the country are not only attempting to promote more equitable access and participation in CS, they are also embracing a broader vision of equity and social justice in CS education. This shift centers on developing a range of culturally responsive-sustaining education (CR-SE) practices designed to affirm students’ cultural identities, elevate historically marginalized voices, empower students as agents of social change, and support their engagement, learning, growth, and achievement in CS.

The Research Alliance is launching a new NSF-funded study (award # 2219389) that will develop and test measures of CR-SE in computer science—providing vital tools and evidence to inform the growing CS education field. The instruments developed and validated through this project will be shared broadly to support additional rigorous research in this area, and to help schools and districts assess their own efforts to implement CR-SE in CS.
