Subject: New: Request the School-Level Master File for Your Research

The School-Level Master File
A powerful tool for NYC school research,
now available upon request.
What is the SCHMA?

We created the unique School-Level Master File (SCHMA) by restructuring publicly available information from the NYC and U.S. Departments of Education into a consistent, user-friendly dataset suitable for analysis.

The SCHMA dataset provides longitudinal data from 1996-2012 for all NYC public schools. It includes:
  • Enrollment and demographic information
  • Attendance rates
  • Number of classes and class sizes
  • Progress Report information
  • Test scores for grades 3-8
  • High school graduation rates
  • School expenditures data
  • Identifiers that link school records over time and link NYC data to other public data sources
The file includes only publicly available data and is aggregated to the school level. There is no way to retrieve information about any individual from this file.

You can now request the SCHMA for your own analysis through the Research Alliance website.

The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is a nonpartisan research center housed at the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The Research Alliance conducts rigorous studies on topics that matter to the city’s public schools. The organization strives to advance equity and excellence in education by providing evidence about policies and practices that promote students' development and academic success.
