New Report: Mentoring, Technology, and Social and Emotional Learning: Findings from the Evaluation of iMentor’s College Ready Program
iMentor report cover
The iMentor College Ready Program is distinctive for several reasons: First, few mentoring programs have embraced technology as fully as iMentor, which uses online communication as one of the primary forms of contact between students and mentors. Second, iMentor attempts to serve all students at its partner schools, throughout their high school career; mentoring programs typically serve only a subset of students, often for a shorter period of time. Third, the program includes a College Ready curriculum taught by iMentor staff during a weekly class, which is unusual. In our new report, Mentoring, Technology, and Social and Emotional Learning: Findings from the Evaluation of iMentor’s College Ready Program, we present findings from our seven-year study of the iMentor program. In this publication, we assess the implementation of iMentor, as well its impact on students’ SEL skills, academic outcomes, college preparation activities, high school graduation, and college enrollment.

The Research Alliance is hiring a Research Associate. This person will play a key role in our evaluation of New York City’s Computer Science for All Initiative (CS4All), a ten-year, districtwide effort to ensure that all NYC public school students learn computer science. The initiative has an explicit focus on equity, including increasing the participation of students historically underrepresented in CS and making CS education more culturally relevant.

The person we hire for this role will also develop and contribute to other studies examining the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to educational inequalities in NYC. They will be responsible for leading projects; supervising junior research staff; creating datasets and conducting quantitative data analyses; authoring public- and practitioner-facing reports, briefs and blog posts; developing infographics and data visualizations; and presenting work to the NYC Department of Education and other audiences of policymakers and educators. We seek applicants who carry diverse perspectives and who bring experience and understanding related to the challenges and opportunities of urban education.
