Subject: New Guides: Supporting Young Men of Color

New Guides for Educators
Improving Academic Readiness for College and Creating Supportive Bonds of Brotherhood
Educators and policymakers around the country are increasingly focusing their efforts on supporting Black and Latino young men on the path to success in college and careers. But relatively few resources offer practical guidance about how to approach this work.

The Research Alliance’s two new guides for educators provide concrete tips, discussion questions, and tools for educators seeking to build a school environment that welcomes and supports Black and Latino male students, with a focus on helping them prepare for college. The guides address:
  • Improving academic readiness for college through such strategies as offering a summer bridge to high school; rethinking math and science teaching; and differentiating academic offerings.
  • Creating supportive bonds of brotherhood through rituals and ceremonies; conversations about personal experiences and challenges; and peer mentorship.
The guides were developed as part of our ongoing evaluation of New York City’s Expanded Success Initiative (ESI), which provided 40 NYC high schools with financial resources and professional development to help them create or expand programs for Black and Latino young men. The new guides—in addition to previously published guides on culturally relevant education and early exposure to and preparation for college—focus on strategies that principals, teachers, and guidance counselors in ESI schools see as particularly important.
