New Brief on Summer Meals Programs
Summer Meals for NYC Students: Understanding the Perspectives and Experiences of Families

Even before the Covid-19 crisis and its deep economic effects, over a million New Yorkers struggled with food insecurity—particularly in low-income communities of color. Because many families with children rely on meal programs provided to students during the school year, rates of food insecurity tend to increase sharply during the summer months. Federal Food Service Programs aim to close the gap in food assistance by providing funding to states to serve summer meals to children. While NYC ranks among the top performing cities in summer meals participation, these numbers are still strikingly low (e.g., in 2017, an estimated 36 NYC children received summer meals for every 100 children who were eligible for free or reduced priced lunch at school). The Research Alliance conducted a series of in-depth focus groups to better understand families' experiences with summer meals programs, including perceived benefits, barriers to participation, and ideas for making the programs more responsive to families' needs.

Maker Partnership Featured in STEM for All Video Showcase

Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Maker Partnership Project is a research-practice partnership between the Research Alliance, Schools That Can and MakerState. The project is building knowledge about how to help elementary teachers integrate computer science (CS) and computational thinking into their regular sciences classes using maker pedagogy. This week, the project is being featured as part of the Stem for All video showcase highlighting efforts across the country to improve STEM and CS education. Featured videos share strategies to address racial and gender inequities and broaden participation in STEM and CS in the midst of COVID. Until May 18 (8 pm EDT), showcase visitors can view the videos, post comments, and vote for favorites. View (and vote for!) our video here.
