The Research Alliance for New York City Schools
Recap of the Research Alliance’s 10th Anniversary Event: “Pursuing Equity in NYC Schools”

On April 29, in recognition of the Research Alliance’s 10th anniversary, we convened an event to reflect on areas of progress as well as persistent challenges facing the City’s public education system. More than 200 educators, CBO staff, funders, scholars, and school and district leaders joined us at Pursuing Equity in NYC Schools: Progress, Challenges, and the Road Ahead. Research Alliance Executive Director James Kemple presented new work examining trends in key student outcomes and highlighting the persistence of troubling inequities. Following the presentation, Deputy Director Adriana Villavicencio moderated an engaging panel discussion featuring NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, Columbia Teachers College Professor Chris Emdin, Bank Street College President Shael Polakow-Suranksy, and Executive Superintendent for the Bronx Meisha Ross Porter. Read our summary of major themes from the panel discussion and peruse the slides from James Kemple’s presentation.

Better Evidence for Better Schools: Insights from the First 10 Years of the Research Alliance for New York City Schools
In 2008, a diverse group of New York City leaders with varying perspectives and experiences came together to establish the Research Alliance for New York City Schools. Since then, the Research Alliance has worked closely with policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders to identify pressing research questions and carry out rigorous studies on a wide range of topics that matter to the City’s public schools. Our new brief, Better Evidence for Better Schools: Insights from the First 10 Years of the Research Alliance for New York City Schools, reflects on key findings and lessons from our work to date. The brief addresses three central questions:
  • What have we learned about system-wide progress and challenges?
  • What have we learned about district policies to promote more effective schools?
  • What have we learned about efforts to support strong teaching and learning?
The brief also outlines several priorities for future research, including studies of the sources of educational inequality, studies assessing specific strategies to promote more equitable outcomes, and research designed to inform practitioners who are implementing and striving to improve programs.
